  • Greetings!

In taking control of your weight it can often be the little things that count. The typical overweight American gains 5-8 lbs every holiday season. A new study conducted by the National Institutes of Health shows that the extra weight gained during the holidays accumulates year after year and may be a major contributor to obesity in later life.

    Taking Control of Holiday Eating

    1. Eating healthfully is not about deprivation. It's important when changing eating habits to change what you're eating, but not so drastically that it is unmaintainable. During the holiday's give yourself permission to splurge on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's etc. By taking away the guilt associated with this behavior you are less likely to go completely off your healthy eating plan.
    2. Don't skip meals. In fact before a holiday party eat a healthy snack at home and you'll be much less likely to overeat.
    3. Keep up your exercise program!! This is very important to stay healthy and reduce stress.
    4. Make sure you get enough rest. In clinical studies, lack of sufficient sleep is directly correlated to weight gain.

    Eat Consciously and Lose Weight

There are many ways to become more conscious of what you're eating. As a hypnotherapist, I assist my clients in becoming more conscious by utilizing the subconscious. Another way to become more conscious is to keep a food log and here's why:

    • You see it in black and white. Many people are totally unaware how much they are actually consuming.
    • You become accountable. If you're recording every bite you eat, you are more likely to hesitate before nibbling on those chips.
    • You are more likely to stick to your plan. Over time people have a tendancy to backslide and lose focus.
According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, people who kept a food log realized that they had been underestimating their daily intake by 1,050 calories. Another study, published in Health Psychology, showed that subjects gained about 500 percent more weight per week than usual over the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays- with the exception of those that kept accurate food logs.
